Traditional Shephard's Pie was made with mutton or lamb and root vegetables. The change to ground beef has Americanized the recipe. What follows is an enhanced version of the American with the addition of a simple spinach salad.
The novice cook requires confidence boosting recipes. The joy of experimenting with food and flavor have yet to begin. What better than to offer a basic comfort food with changeable enhancements? Understanding a root vegetable is one that is grown beneath the soil's surface will open other options as well: turnips, radishes, rutabagas. Soon after, the cook will look for a wine and accompaniments to compliment their new dish.
